Hire a Digital Marketing Agency? 7 Smart Questions to Ask First

hire a digital marketing agency

Before you hire a digital marketing agency, you should know three things: who will actually touch your account, who handles your domain and website, and how you’ll know it’s working. Most East Texas business owners sign without asking any of that. They find out six months later, when the reports are full of colorful charts and the phone still isn’t ringing.

I’ve run MasseyMedia out of Lufkin since 1999, and a good chunk of our new clients come to us after a bad agency experience somewhere else. These are the seven questions I’d ask if I were sitting on your side of the table.

What You Should Get When You Hire a Digital Marketing Agency

More calls. More form fills. More people walking through your door. Rankings, traffic, and followers only matter when they feed those three.

For most local businesses, a good agency handles local SEO, Google Business Profile management, reviews, and maybe ads or social media. A great one also tells you which of those you don’t need yet. If every proposal you get includes every service, someone is selling a package, not solving your problem.

7 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Digital Marketing Agency

1. Who is actually doing the work?

Plenty of agencies sell the account locally and ship the work to a white-label shop in another state or another country. Ask for names. Ask whether the person writing your Google posts has ever been to Lufkin or Nacogdoches. If the salesperson can’t tell you who builds your pages, that’s your answer.

2. Can you show me results for a business like mine?

Skip the national case study. You want a plumber in Nacogdoches, a dentist in Tyler, a law firm in Lufkin. Ask to see map pack rankings and call tracking numbers, not a screenshot that says “impressions up 300%.” Impressions are cheap. Calls aren’t.

3. Who handles my domain, hosting, and Google Business Profile?

Ask exactly who registers and renews your domain, whose servers your site runs on, and who has access to your Google Business Profile. There’s nothing wrong with an agency managing your domain and hosting. Done right, it’s the safest setup, because someone is watching renewals and fixing problems before you notice them. What you want is an agency that’s upfront about the arrangement and answers the phone when you need something. Be wary of one that can’t give you a straight answer.

4. What will the monthly report show me?

Ask for calls, form submissions, direction requests, and where you rank on the map in each town you serve. A 14-page report of bounce rates and “engagement” is an agency grading its own homework.

5. Am I locked into a contract?

SEO takes time, so it’s fair for an agency to ask for a few months to show movement. A 12-month lock with a cancellation fee is something else. An agency confident in its work doesn’t need to trap you.

6. What are you doing about AI search?

Your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews who to call. Your agency should be able to explain, in plain English, how your business gets named in those answers. If they shrug, they’re still running a 2019 playbook. Our AI SEO page covers how we handle it.

7. Do you guarantee a #1 ranking?

The right answer is no. Google says so in its own guide on whether you need an SEO: nobody can guarantee a top spot. An agency that promises one is either bluffing or planning to rank you for a phrase nobody searches.

Red Flags When You Hire a Digital Marketing Agency

  • Cold emails promising “page one in 30 days.”
  • Pricing that only appears after a “strategy session.”
  • No local phone number and no one who can meet you in person.
  • Reports you can’t understand without them on the phone.
  • They ask for your passwords instead of being added as a manager on your accounts.

That last one matters. Google Business Profile, Google Analytics, and nearly every ad platform let you add a manager without handing over your login. A legitimate agency knows that and asks for access the right way.

Local or National: Which Digital Marketing Agency Fits East Texas?

National agencies have big teams and polished slide decks. What they usually don’t have is any sense that a Diboll shop competes with Lufkin businesses for the same map pack, or that customers along Loop 287 search differently than customers in Tyler. Local search is local. The agency running yours should know the towns.

That doesn’t make every local digital marketing agency good. Plenty aren’t. Run all seven questions on everyone you talk to, including us.

What to Have Ready Before the First Call

You’ll get better answers if you show up with a little homework done:

  • The three or four services that make you the most money.
  • The towns you actually want customers from.
  • Logins (or at least the owner email) for your domain, website, and Google Business Profile.
  • A rough monthly number you’re comfortable spending.
  • Your two or three biggest competitors.

With that list, any decent agency can tell you in one conversation where your biggest gaps are. If they need three calls and a “discovery fee” to get there, keep shopping.

How much does it cost to hire a digital marketing agency in East Texas?

It depends on how many services you need and how competitive your market is. A local service business focused on local SEO and Google Business Profile management will spend far less than one running ads in several cities. Ask for a flat monthly price in writing, and be wary of any agency that won't give a number until after a paid discovery session.

How long before a digital marketing agency gets results?

Google Business Profile improvements often show up in 30 to 60 days. Local SEO usually starts moving in 60 to 90 days and keeps building over 6 to 12 months. Ads can drive calls the week they launch.

Should I hire a local digital marketing agency or a national one?

For a business that serves customers in specific East Texas towns, a local agency usually wins. They know the towns, the competition, and how people search here, and you can sit across a table from the person doing the work.

What questions should I ask a marketing agency before signing a contract?

Ask who does the work, whether they can show results for a business like yours, who handles your domain, hosting, and Google Business Profile, what the monthly report shows, whether there's a long-term contract, how they handle AI search, and whether they guarantee rankings. The right answer to that last one is no.

Is it a red flag if an agency asks for my passwords?

Usually, yes. Google Business Profile, Google Analytics, and most ad platforms let you add an agency as a manager without sharing your login. An agency that wants your password instead may not be following best practices.
